When will the Sony PS3 become a viable competitor in the US market (for video games)?
Maybe it already is?
I personally don’t think so yet.
What do you all think?
Example thoughts:
1. More software (that are FUN)
2. Cheaper price
3. Better Online service than XBox Live
4. When it learns to reach a mainstream like Nintendo has
5. When it caters to the American gamer like XBox (360) has
5. You know the drill. It’s really just an open discussion.
The Playstation 3 is already becoming a viable competitor in the U.S. Market for video games.
The PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 every month of this year in the U.S. except for 1 or 2 months. I know that the 360 outsold the PS3 in the U.S. by just 900 units in April and the 360 outsold the PS3 another month of this year as well, but other than that, the PS3 has been selling more.
1. The PS3 already has plenty of really great PS3 exclusive software titles and there’s a lot of Playstation 3 exclusives coming out. The advantage that the Playstation 3 and Sony has when it comes to games is that there are MORE games that are actually published by Sony, but Microsoft has had mostly just a bunch of 3rd party exclusives and hardly any 1st party games at all.
Saints Row 2 is coming to the PS3 and before it was a 360 exclusive franchise. Bioshock is coming to the PS3 in November as well as any other future Bioshock games, Mass Effect could come to the PS3 now that the developer of Mass Effect (Bioware) has been acquired by EA Games, and it is rumored that Dead Rising 2 could come to the PS3 as well.
If you want to talk about software, Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet are the biggest PS3 game titles for this Fall, and there’s Motorstorm Pacific Rift as well as SOCOM Confrontation coming this fall as well, and that’s a solid lineup.
And don’t even get me started about talking about all the PS3 exclusives for 2009: Killzone 2, Infamous, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, Infamous, Heavy Rain, God of War 3 and plenty of other exclusives that have yet to be confirmed. Did you know that Rockstar Games is doing a PS3 exclusive too (L.A. Noire)? Believe me, there’s TONS of PS3 software coming.
2. As far as price goes, the PS3 has been outselling the 360 worldwide for a long time now even at the higher price point, but I think that once the PS3 gets down to $299.99 in the United States, that’s when PS3 sales will start to really pick up.
3. Sony has improved it’s Online service significantly since launch and there’s lots of new features coming for the Playstation Store such as a Video Store, Music Store, and Playstation HOME. The Video Store is supposed to be coming this Summer and HOME is on track to be released late 2008-early 2009.
4. As far as mainstream goes, the PS3 will reach a more mainstream audience once the price is lower. Sony has always attracted Casual gamers because there would be no way in the world that the PS1 and PS2 sold over 100+million consoles without casual gamers buying them. When it comes to the mainstream audience and casual gamers, that’s an area where Microsoft has had trouble with because Microsoft mostly attracts just hardcore gamers.
5. The Playstation 3 already caters to the American gamer, but the PS3 will cater to the American gamer even more once the PS3’s next biggest shooters: Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 are released as well as other “violent” and “bloody” games that are coming out on the PS3, but the thing that makes the PS3 so unqinue and different is that it caters to a wider audience of gamers. Microsoft only caters to hardcore gamers and the hardcore gamer audience isn’t as big as the casual gamer audience. It’s going to take more than selling more consoles in the U.S. to win a console war because Europe and Japan are just as important, and those are 2 areas where the PS3 has been performing very well in.
I would say that in about 2-3 years, that’s when the PS3 will outsell the Xbox 360 worldwide in total numbers sold.
