Is it illegal to post video game sheet music online?
There are a ton of websites that make sheet music for video games. Thus, it would appear that it is legal. I don’t think any of them get in trouble.
The people who make the video games generally don’t put up any music for sale, so finding it on random websites is the only way to get it! (I would definitely buy stuff if it was available!)
But it just doesn’t seem like it would be- because of some copyright rule or something.
I’ve made some sheet music for some songs that I preformed on YouTube. I want to link the music in my video- but is that illegal? I know everyone does it regardless.
What if I include all the details of the song on the page? I wouldn’t be taking credit for writing the music or anything.

For example, just because everyone on the highway speeds, that doesn’t mean you’re allowed to speed. You can still get a ticket.
Sheet music is entitled to copyright protection just as with any other original, expressive work. Whether the copyright owner will pursue an infringement action against you is a separate issue altogether. However, the lack of enforcement with other sheet music doesn’t absolve any potential liability on your part.
Also, copyright isn’t about taking credit. It is about, among other things, the right to control the distribution of your work. Thus, including details of the song does not absolve liability either.
