Most people have broadband at home to play things like online games amongst other uses for that type of speed. Some have considered using the cell phone services and USB devices that all you to have a faster connection while on the road. Are these good enough to actually use for online gaming?
The first issue that you are going to run into is actual bandwidth. Many of these types of connections are limited to about 5 gigabytes of total transfer per month. This means that you do have a cap on your connection that you will either run into or you will go over costing you considerably money in extra fees if you make this mistake.
Many online games like the popular World of Warcraft can take up to about 50 megabytes of transfer in an hour. On a 5 gigabyte connection, this means you can get about 100 hours of playtime out of that type of device. If you are playing an online game, use a bandwidth management tool to find out how much you are downloading and uploading. Add these two numbers to get an idea of how much you would really be using.
There is another factor to consider. When you are playing a game online there is latency. This is the measurement of time between your keystroke and the action appearing on the server. For example, when you jump there is a time difference from the moment you press the key and when the character in the game actually jumps.
On USB type connections, generally the latency is not very good. You might have more than a 1 second delay which will put you add a huge disadvantage in online games where timing is very important. You will not be able to play very competitively on certain connections that rely upon cell phone signals. While it may work for you, there might also be too much lag to really enjoy playing the game.
