Can someone explain _why_ torrenting causes lag in games?
If you’re playing some online game, and torrenting at the same time, You will experience lag. It’s a well known fact that this happens.
For example, your ping to the server could be 30 milliseconds normally, and 500ms when torrenting.
Suppose your expensive internet connection (confirmed by a speed test) supports 15Mbps down and 1Mbps up.
Your bittorrent client is using 200kbps per second down and 50kbps up – nowhere near the maximum allowed by your connection. Still, it affects your ping to the game server.
Meanwhile, another person with a cheaper connection ( 1Mbps down / 500kbps up ) who is not torrenting will have normal latency.
My question is: How does this happen? Why does using bandwidth affect latency?
Torrents require massive amounts of bandwidth and will usually keep using bandwidth till it is using almost all of it. I have to be careful cause when I torrent I pretty much hog the bandwidth and am the only one in the house that can get things done.
