Things about stock trading that puzzle me?
Recently I started learning how to stock trade using the virtual stock market game from Market Watch (http://vse.marketwatch.com/). And some of the stuff I read online doesn’t match what I see in my portfolio. For example a few days ago I bought 1100 stocks of APPY at $0.41 per stock. Right now the price of the stock went back to 0.41 but in my TOTAL RETURN field I see -3.66% and in my GAIN/LOSS I see -8.36$. Why is that? Shouldn’t it be 0 since the stock is the same price as what I bought it for? Another question, what is market value? I thought it was the current value of my stock based on the current stock price but the number I see is $447.92, but 1100 shares at 0.41 per share is exactly $451, why is it off by a few dollars? Also last question, what is total equity? Mine reads $481.69 but my cash reads $33.77, If I started with $500 why don’t the numbers add up? Thanks, you don’t have to answer all of them at once.
Penny stocks trade in fractional amounts less than cents. Check to see if the price .41 is rounded both on the purchase and on your recent statement. Right now the stock is trading at .3815. You also have to see if the game is counting commissions. In the real word when you buy a stock you pay a commission which immediately makes your cost price higher than the price you were quoted.
Market value is the current price x the number of shares in your account. Again with penny stocks you have to look at the fractional value.
Total equity is grand total of all the stocks in your account minus your margin balance. Yours doesn’t add to your original purchase amount because you have a loss from your holding in APPY.
