Computer or laptop what should I get?
At the moment I have a very old computer which definately needs replacing but lack of funds is a definate issue. I am not computer literate at all & only know enough to find my way around for my modest needs which is to write & print off personal & business letters, send emails, to use ebay, chat online & to generally surf the internet. I do not download music or play games & dont want to buy anything with extras that I am never going to use. Can anyone advise me what is available in the UK that would adequately suit my needs & roughly how much I should be looking to pay. Maybe there a particular make PC or laptop currently on the market that would reasonable value for money for someone like me. I know I can shop around myself but I have no idea what I should be looking for & all the technical terms & jargon is gobble do gooch to me ![]()
I really would be very gratefull for any help.
Hello,
(ANS) As a very experienced computer person (ex IT professional with a training to MCSE level) I would advise you to take a look at DELL’s website.
Why? I have been dealing on & off with DELL machines for many years for friends, family & colleagues, they offer extremely good value for money and in the current times 2008 have several new laptop & desktop systems at whats termed “entry level” i.e. someone like yourself (budget wise) and computing needs wise.
**DELL are doing some nice entry level systems in the £250 to £350 price range which would meet your needs quite well.
**Try to buy a machine with windows XP home or XP Pro rather than windows Vista. Vista is very large & this means it takes a great deal of the machines resources to drive it. XP uses less & is a very stable version of windows in my opinion. Also Vista is likely to be gone in less than 12mths & may soon be replaced by windows 7 i.e. the next version of windows client.
**Windows XP offers far far fewer program compatibility problems in contrast to Vista. XP can be highly tweaked & tuned for improved performance over Vista. XP has a much bigger range of software written to run on it, & more device drivers too. XP has a 7 year long track record in contrast to Vista which only has 12mths approx.

Hope that is useful?
