Why are CD’s required to play games on computer?
Once you buy and install the game, you should be able to play without the CD. Spore works like this. Hellgate: London worked like that online. Is there just a single company whom does this?
I understand it is so that me and all my friends can’t play with one CD. That’s why they have keys.
There are two reasons
The first is that many games use a lot of images and other resources and to avoid the game filling up your Hard Drive the CD or DVD isaccessed by the game during play. For example at each change of level in a game new images and sounds may be downloaded from the CD or DVD to your Hard Drive, and those that are no longer needed are deleted again.
The second is for security. Each CD or DVD will be identified by a small application that is copied to your computer by the game. This application ensures the CD or DVD is still in your computer either when you play the game. That way if you bought the game and installed it you would still need to keep the original disc. You would not be able to buy the game install it and sell the disc on to another person. Or loan it to all your friends and all of you play the game, but only one of you actually buy it.
Some of these security programs go so far as to stop you even making backup copy.
