Prohibition and online bingo

How many of you remember the famous movie Casablanca? There is a scene in which Luis (police chief) just told Rick (Humphrey Bogart to leave her coffee. When Rick was asked why, the police chief, and that wins the game given by the cashier in the cafeteria, I say I'm shocked, shocked to discover that gambling is going on here. right to hypocrisy? But the same sort of logic used in illicit Internet Gambling Enforcement Act passed in 2006.

A little research in the history of this bill and how it was approved by the hypocrisy of so many shows that is really striking. Bill was transferred to the Port Security Act by Republican Bill Frist (R-Texas) shortly before the bill was introduced in the middle of the night, no time for debate. In fact, many conferences have been fully aware of the more ridiculous a bill to ensure port safety and security.

It seems that Senator Frist has serious ethical problems of their own including finance law violations and insider trading. Frist said he was concerned about children's play online it would be nice if it was true. A recent episode of 60 minutes there were several minor attempts to access the various gaming sites without success. Another argument was to protect public safety and morals. Given the wide variety groups of pornography, bomb making, hate, and manufacturing drugs available in Internet users of all ages, the argument seems absurd.

Another argument often used by conservatives is that the game could support terrorism. Terrorism seems to be growing that the current administration has to find a justification for the bills that restrict or limit rights enumerated in the United States Constitution. To date there has been no documented binding event or incident of online gaming money laundering or terrorism. Terrorism is a serious matter but when used as a smokescreen to justify the order on the day of the current administration of the public tend to ignore the threats credible.

When the game industry has tried to reach Frist no answer but a reference to a statement issued to a group of special religious interest. Frist essentially said the brick and mortar casino can be, but a sort of online play is somehow more reprehensible. With the new blocking software online gambling sites Frist minor arguments became moot sir. Frist is basically to please a small minority that welcomes government intrusion into their lives.

A large majority of Americans resent government intrusion in their private lives but somehow the government never seems to get the message. Most reasonable people would agree that what a person does in the privacy of your own home or choose how their money is their own business and are perfectly capable adults to make informed decisions about choosing to run their lives.

Take the example of online bingo, a traditional form of charitable gambling socially acceptable and churches have been using bingo as a fundraising tool for decades. Not everyone, especially in remote and rural areas have access to these games, but still wants to play bingo. The Internet is the obvious solution for these citizens and deny them access to online bingo would essentially unequal simply because to its location. These players are making a choice to play in the privacy of your own home and the owners are spending their hard earned money and what entity the government is right to say you can not?

A new study bill in Congress Barney Frank (D-Mass) essentially repeal the bad legislation that is consistent Internet Gambling Enforcement Act would regulate and, finally, Internet gambling and tax revenues generated will aid of several government programs. Frank joins Ron Paul (R-Texas), a Republican who believes that citizens are able to make their own decisions, making it one of the few to join the founding principles of his party. A project Bill was presented to Frank and Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) that essentially allow gaming revenues must be taxed.

Another ray of hope is a complaint filed by the interactive entertainment media and the Association game against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Reserve. The lawsuit seeks to stop implementation of UIGEA on the ground is a violation of the rights to freedom of expression, freedom of association and equal protection under law. The lawsuit asks the court for a temporary restraining order. Unfortunately, as is, because of a lawsuit is the only way of canceling a bad bill.

Our Constitution allows citizens to petition the government for redress of grievances and time and again was the most effective citizen to express their views and feelings to their representatives. There have been several cases in which certain letters, emails, phone calls and have influenced how the legislator may vote on a particular issue. Obviously bingo players and other players are not criminals, who can make their own decisions, and must begin to fight for their rights. Believe it or not, contact their respective representatives may in fact have an effect. A civilian, after well-reasoned, telephone or mail is a way safe for lawmakers how their constituents on an issue or bill.

Two quotes, the first by Abraham Lincoln, and the second by the celebrated author Ayn Rand is very relevant in considering the issue of individual freedom;

The prohibition goes beyond the bounds of reason in attempts to control what the appetite of a man by the law and commit crimes of things that are not crimes. A prohibition law undermines the very principles upon which our government was founded.
Abraham Lincoln

The only power any government has the power to take action against offenders. Well, when there are not enough criminals they are made. It says so things of a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without violating the law. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's in it for any person? However, just pass the kind of laws that can not be observed or not enforced or objectively interpreted and create a nation of law-and-take advantage of the fault.
Ayn Rand (Atlas Shrugged) 1957
