Ways of reducing effect on bandwidth by MMOs?

I’m thinking of playing either World of Warcraft or Guild Wars and I was wondering if there is a way of reducing the loss of download speed for other users on a network? My family have a broadband package which includes digital television and broadband and whenever I download large files everyone else on the network finds that the internet is pretty much unusable.

How much of an effect does playing online games have on a network and is there any real way (other than playing in the dead of night) to reduce any problems?

You may be surprised by the bandwidth consumption of MMOs. The makers of the games have a big interest in minimizing network bandwidth requirements because on their end, they are dealing with thousands of users per realm (in the case of WoW at least). Gaming isn’t like downloading a large file though so your family shouldn’t see a major lag due to it. I have Verizon FiOS currently and previously used Comcast. We’ve had 4 (peak of 5 users when a friend came over) users playing WoW along with the TV and haven’t noticed any problems.

Game traffic is confined to position (X, Y, Z, and orientation) and state (gear IDs, level, faction ID, etc…). These will all be raw numbers or IDs that the client code (the software on your computer) knows how to interpret into the gaming world you see on the display. Traffic is kept to a minimum by relying on the client to render the game based on state data from the servers.
