Outrigger Canoe
History
The Tonga Traditional PPAO.
Hawai'iloa a double sailing canoe built as a replica Polynesian canoe travel.
canoes were originally developed by Austronesian-speaking peoples of the islands of Southeast Asia for sea travel, and were used to transport of these people both in East Polynesia and New Zealand and western Indian Ocean to Madagascar during the Austronesian migration period. Even today especially among Austronesian groups (Malay peoples, Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia) outrigger canoes are used.
Canoes are also used in some groups Austronesian not like the Sinhalese in Sri Lanka, where they are known as oruwa and among certain groups of people in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The importance of this gap ethnological has been studied by James Hornell.
When Magellan's ships first encountered the Chamorros of the Marianas Islands in 1521, Antonio Pigafetta recorded that the Chamorro sailing "Magallanes surpassed in speed and maneuverability.
Polynesian Society Traveling has two double-hulled canoes, sailing, and Hawai'iloa Hklea, and sails between the islands in the Pacific using traditional Polynesian sailing without instruments.
The technology has been in the modern era. Outrigger canoes can be very large fishing or transport vessels, and the Philippines, canoes (called Bangka, or balanghai) are often equipped with gasoline engines. The links between canoes and the Philippine Sea covers most of the policy, in which the smallest political unit in the country even after the so-called historical barangay pros Balanga balance used in the original migration of Austronesian peoples first through the archipelago and beyond.
Use modern sport
canoe racing became a popular sport in the canoe, with many clubs spread across the world. Outrigger Canoe Racing is the State of Hawaii, sport and inter school sport high. In Hawaii, families participate in summer regattas with Manini age groups (children 6 adults with a boat) and up to 12 years 60.
the big races in Hawaii include the Molokai Hoe (43 mi/69 km race of men on the island of Molokai to Oahu Channel Kaiwi Cross), Na Wahine O Ke Kai (The same race for women) and the Queen Liliuokalani race held near Kona on the island of Hawaii.
Racing canoes. The boat in the front right, a narrower hull and smaller body, is a one-person canoe, or OC1. The other boats are six person or OC6 canoes.
Six person canoes (or OC6) are among the most commonly used for sport, canoe single person (or OC1) are also very common. Two and four person canoes are also sometimes used, and two six-person canoes are sometimes handled together as a catamaran to make a person more than twelve double canoe.
OC6 modern shells and crystal clusters are often reinforced plastic. However, some canoes are made from traditional materials. In ancient Hawaii, canoes carved from koa tree trunks too old. These canoes, though rare, are still in use today. The iako are usually made of wood, old loves iako iako and connections are usually made with rope wrapped and tied in interlocking ways to reduce the risk that the connection between entirely separate, breaking the string.
Modern shells and cluster OC1 tend to be glass reinforced plastic with carbon fiber reinforced plastic or Kevlar canoe to produce a strong yet lightweight. OC1 are often operated rudders by pedals. More non-traditional designs rudders. OC1 often use aluminum iako, with a mechanism for assembling and dismantling of the vessel (snaps, large wing nuts, etc.).
