VGA to DVI adaptor, will it do anything, or will it display the same?
hi!
i have bought a new graphics card for my new desktop; its a NVIDIA GeForce 9400. its one of the most latest cards. i bought it to play an MMORPG (massive multi player online role playing game) like lord of the rings online or world of war craft. i noticed that the new card has two video output terminals:
a DVI dual link (the top picture): http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/dual-dvi.jpg
and a VGA: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cc/VGA_port.jpg
the monitor is HD think as it displays 1440 X 900 and is modern. the socket on the monitor is VGA not DVI. so if i get an adaptor for the monitor cable (VGA to DVI) and plug it in the DVI slot on the computer, will it make a difference? cause my monitor has a VGA port so maybe it cant support DVI? then again why would there be an adaptor made for VGA to DVI.
I’m very confused, i am good with computers and electronics but i just don’t want to go out and buy something that will make no difference.

From what I read, VGA is an analog signal, DVI is digital. Now obviously if you had a DVI source, DVI would be better. But getting VGA to DVI adapter does not “improve” the quality. Adapters in general do not “improve” quality; it simply let’s the user have more connection options.
Stick with the VGA connection. Sometimes, video cards have DVI output (motherboards now even have HDMI output). In that case, the DVI signal would actually be digital, so you would want to use that.
A DVI dual link is a connection that lets digital and analog signals pass through, in case you use an adapter or a single connection from your receiver to your TV in a home theater.
